In this workshop, I'll use a positive, fun, and supportive teaching environment to guide you in finding joy and pride your creative digital "calligrabilities."

WHY PROCREATE 101?

Over the past several years, the popularity of digital calligraphy has exploded. Paired with tablet devices such as the iPad, apps like Procreate have made digital calligraphy and art fun, accessible, and incredibly convenient.

If you're a traditional calligraphy artist or enthusiast and you've never tried digital calligraphy, you may not realize how much fun and creative expression is possible in this brave, new digital world. 

Maybe you've heard about Procreate and have been interested to give it a try, but have no idea where to start. Or, maybe you've tried the app, but found it intimidating and complicated.

Enter Procreate 101.

I've helped thousands of students all over the world learn a variety of creative skills and I've designed this workshop to teach you everything you need to know to forge your own path of fun, discovery, and create gorgeous digital masterpieces.

Procreate 101 will give you a solid foundation and understanding of this incredible tool - saving you time, effort, and frustration.

What will I Learn?

You will learn everything you need to be proficient working with Procreate as an art and calligraphy tool. The tone of the workshop will positive, supportive, helpful, and FUN! Learning digital art and doesn't have to be super serious, complicated, or dull, so plan on getting lots of support and having a great time learning together.

INTRO TO DIGITAL ART

An introduction to digital art and calligraphy with examples of how these skills can be used on projects.

DIGITAL CALLIGRAPHY & LETTERING BASICS

An introduction into the basic tools - an iPad, Apple Pencil, and the Procreate app.

PROCREATE INTERFACE

A thorough walkthrough of the how the works and how it's organized.

CANVAS CREATION

The first important step in digital art creation is creating your art canvas. You'll learn the basics of canvas creation and the default settings available.

CANVAS LAYOUT

A thorough explanation of custom canvas creation, what the settings mean, and how to set up your canvas for the best results.

DRAWING TOOLS

A summary of all of the drawing tools available for drawing and lettering including an introduction to the brush, eraser, smudge tool, layers, an color tools.

PROCREATE BRUSHES

A detailed walkthrough of Procreate brushes, including default options available, installing custom brushes, and the essential knowledge you need to effectively work with brushes.

LAYERS

A comprehensive walkthrough of everything you need to know about layers - the basics, blending modes, masks, and more.

WORKING WITH COLOR

The color palette is an incredibly powerful tool in Procreate - you'll learn how this panel is organized and how to use all of the features packed into this tool.

ADJUSTMENT TOOLS

 A summary of the numerous adjustment tools available including the move tool, selection tool, adjustments,  and settings.

You'll learn how to work intelligently with selections to easily modify and fix elements elements of your digital calligraphy masterpieces.

Learn how and when to use the extraordinarily versatile adjustment tools available in Procrete. 

TYPE, SETTINGS & TOOLS

A thorough explanation of the versatile app settings and actions (including some fun hidden tools and features!. Learn how to import guides and reference images, adjust the program settings, and more. 

PROJECT WALKTHROUGH

A start to finish walkthrough of one of my most popular lettering pieces including use of a template file that you can follow along with.

TIPS, TRICKS & NEXT STEPS

Armed with your newfound digital calligraphy powers, I'll share some final tips and tricks about working with your finished art and next steps for furthering your skills.

What Supplies do I Need?

This class may involve the shortest supply list ever - you may even already own everything you need!

The supplies needed are an iPad, Apple Pencil*, and the App Procreate (a one-time $9.99 USD purchase).

I'll give you all of the other resources that we'll use in the workshop including brushes, guides, and more.

*Note: Technically an Apple Pencil is optional because it you can draw/write in Procreate with just your finger, but the Apple Pencil includes several features and makes for a much more natural writing experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

The live workshops will be held over 4 Saturdays in September and October (September 17, 24, October 1, 8). Each class will be scheduled from 11am - 1:30pm Central time.  The dates are spread out to give you time to learn, practice, and attend as many sessions as you can. After the last live session you will have ongoing access to the recordings (there is no expiration planned).

YES! Each workshop session will be live with me, Tamer, as the instructor.

YES! I will go over all of the basics that you'll need to become proficient in Procreate, assuming you've never opened or even seen the app before 😃

I'll be explaining all of the essential tools in detail, including touching on some more advanced concepts and techniques. There will also be interactive elements, Q&A, and a complete, step-by-step walkthrough of a sample art project (we'll actually be applying the skills we learn about), so I expect there to be value for students at a variety of skill levels.

Nope. Anyone can learn to create wonderful lettering art in Procreate. The app includes some handy tools and settings that can be applied to make lettering easier for beginners. Plus, I'll provide templates and guides that support the learning process.

Because the workshops will be live, you'll have access to me for the full 2+ hour duration of each group class (a total of at least 10 hrs!). I've also limited the number of participants to offer as much individual attention as possible during the group sessions

You will have ONGOING access to all of the recordings - there is no planned expiration, so you will have continued access to this course as long as the Blackletter Foundry learning platform is online. In addition, each of the live videos will be edited and organized into sections after each class day to make it easier for you to find and access specific topics.

YES! You will get access to a variety of course materials that will be available for download or accessible via the online class space.

No, you don't need to know anything about computers or technology to get value from this workshop or to be able to learn and use this Procreate. If you've ever written with a pencil or pen on paper, you already have all the skills you'll need.

Not at all - in order to follow along, you will need any iPad, the app Procreate from the Apple App Store, and ideally an Apple Pencil. Technically, you can even draw and write with just your fingers (I've done this before!), but an Apple Pencil will make your experience much better and more natural. For all the details, just check out my Procreate 101 Supplies Page.

Absolutely not! One of the great things about Procreate is that it works with a variety of iPad models. I had an earlier version of Procreate that ran on the very first iPad ever release (waaay back in 2010).

The current version of Procreate (meaning the latest version that includes all the most recent features) is compatible with all of these iPad models:

- iPad Pro 12.9-inch (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th generation)

There are so many iPad models that have been released over the years that it can be pretty hard to figure out which one you have to check against the Procreate compatibility list (see the last FAQ question above).

There are so many iPad models available now that it can be pretty hard to understand the differences and which one to buy. To help, I wrote a detailed article explaining the differences with suggestions on recommended models. You can find the article here: Which iPad is Best for Procreate?

Unfortunately, no. Each version of the pencil - referred to as the First Generation (older) and Second Generation (newer) - is compatible with specific iPad models, and it can be pretty confusing. To figure out which one is compatible with your iPad:
